Help 4 Hero's
Colchester in Essex is twinned with
three European towns, Wetzlar in Germany, Avignon in France and
Imola in Italy.
Wetzlar
in Germany
Wetzlar
is situated in the German state of Hessan on the River Lahn and
has approximately 54,000 inhabitants. In the centre of Wetzlar is
Altstadt (Old Town), which is a mix of Timber Framed Houses,
cobbled streets and market squares. The town stands on the banks
of the River Lahn and the old and new parts of the town are joined
by a bridge over the river. In the new part of the town can be
found Retail outlets, bus and rail stations.Similarly
to Colchester, Wetzlar has the remains of a medieval ring wall.
Avignon
in France
Avignon
in France has approximately 92,000 inhabitants and is famous for
it's unfinished bridge, city walls and theatre festival.
The origins of Avignon date back to 3000 BC. The
famous Cathedral and Palais des Papes were built in the 14th
Century when Pope Clement V left Rome and chose Avignon to be the
capital of Christianity
Imola
in Italy
Imola
was originally an ancient Roman colony and is situated between
Bologna and Rimini.
The
city was based on a Roman Town but following the decline of the
Roman Empire and the Lombard invasions the area suffered a period
of decline. There was recovery in the 10th century but this was
just a prelude to turbulent medieval period where Imola faced wars
with Bologna, Faenz and Ravenna. In 1473, under the rule of
Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the town was given as a dowry to his
daughter. The Renaissance period that followed allowed the town to
flourish and the architecture of the town was transformed.
Imola
is probably now most famous for being one of the towns featured on
the Formula One Circuit
