May
5 is Liberation Day in the Netherlands, the day when the country
marks the end of World War II, now exactly 65 years ago. Today -
once every five years, Liberation Day - normally a free day for a
minority of people in the country - is transformed into a national
public holiday, and 5 May 2010 is just such a day.
Music including the pipes and drums is especially notable as
part of the celebration, since it was music that lifted the
spirits of the Dutch people during the Nazi occupation in the
1940s.
The Netherlands remembers on May 4 "Remembrance Day"
those who suffered and died in World War II, and in the many
conflicts since then.
Ceremonies are held that day throughout the country, but many eyes
are focused on Amsterdam and the national commemoration
in the city's central Dam Square, where Queen Beatrix
traditionally leads those who lay wreaths at the foot of the
National Monument to mark a two-minute moment of silence at 8
pm.
